News and Notes is migrating to our existing PMWiki. This is an ongoing process. Only the most recent of the News and Notes articles will actually migrate, the old ones will be archived on-line, in static form and remain available indefinitely. (But don't expect them in book form any time soon...)
The reason for this upgrade is the same reason your admin moved his personal website away from Wordpress.
According to noone less than Wordpress plugin developer "Dave" (of Spam Karma fame), at least.
He's right too, it does, it's difficult to use, overweight has too many features and is a general load of... crap; it's also driven by MySQL Databases, that means that there's a lot of overhead just to put the pages out and the management panel is so slow as to be virtually unusable, according to YSlow, it takes 15s to load the management panel, and that's after it's already cached... not acceptable.
Getting rid of the need to use MySQL (it's not MySQL's fault, mind, but rather of a blindly database-centric dev-culture) gets rid of that overhead and PmWiki is so well designed that no management console is needed, it's editing tools are also much easier to use. flat files are good things.
Since the old Wordpress-based N&N used a different filing system its pages did not on a semantic level interrelate with pages in The Hub, which was undesirable for academic reasons.
The only problem is that PmWiki does not natively implement comments, this may change later and if it does, or a good third party extension arrives, we'll enable them.
