Journal: Change to Shutdown Policy

Frontios's shutdown policy has been changed. All users can now shut down the system without requiring administrator access, you will; however have to re-authenticate.

With great power comes great responsibility, it is important that frontios remain online without un-necessary interruption. The UNIX operating-system performs many background tasks automatically and it is undesirable for these tasks to be deferred.

In particular, do not shut-down and then restart the system if you feel that it is not operating properly. (Please refer to the Online Helpdesk or file a Problem Report in such cases.) If the system can process the shutdown request, it has not crashed and therefore there is no need do this. All shutdowns go through INIT and are recorded in a log.

The "reboot" command is not available because of this.

The shutdown procedure can be initiated from a logged-in desktop session by going to [K menu] → "Leave" and selecting "Shutdown". You will be warned if other users are still logged in, please carefully consider the wisdom of shutting down in these circumstances. You can also use the shutdown(8) command from the shell, if you so desire.

The decision to change this policy arises from an increased need for users to shut down the system gracefully due to frequent electrical disruptions caused by summer lightning, and the impending administrative hiatus.
