We are soon to begin trial runs with offsite backups to a data center in California. These backups will be automated, delta coded and will be taken daily.
Delta coding means that only the differences between files existing on the backup server and the local file-system will be sent, exponentially increasing speed and throughput.
The scheme will not backup files larger than 5015MB so you will have to back those up yourself. Mostly these files are videos. Only files in users personal home directories will be backed-up and the backup will be filtered to avoid backing-up junk, temporary files, trashed files, caches and thumbnails.
In the interests of full disclosure, this will cause files located in your home directory to be transmitted over a heavily encrypted channel across the Internet and stored in a secure server. At no time will these files be available for public download. However, if you have any files which contain information that should not be transferred remotely, such as compromising information, you need to let us know right now. We will show you how to move these files to an external medium, such as a removable flash drive so that they will not be backed up this-way.
These backups are intended for disaster recovery purposes only and are not remit to recklessly delete files with the expectation that they can be "restored from backup", that is not guaranteed.
