If you're wondering what happened and why we have suddenly upgraded after announcing that we wouldn't, it has to do with one little misbehaving O.S. utility wiping out the entire "root" filesystem without warning.
You will have to reset your passwords back to whatever they were manually, follow directions posted (you only need to do this once).
It remains to be seen if this upgrade is actually suitable. Once again we must take a "wait and see" approach.
(Tip: the new login-screen is weird. Click your name first, then type your password in the box that appears.)
(Tip 2: If your desktop widgets are messed up, file a PR)
