Switching to Google Chrome

This document is UNIX-centric, switch to a Windows version

This page is about switching to Google Chrome. Need help with Google Chrome itself?

The Administration recommends that those suffering from reduced browser and website performance switch from Firefox to Google Chrome, a new and improved browser with much better performance.

Switching

Step One - Remove Firefox icon

Close all Firefox windows. This will prevent many unpredictable problems.

  • Remove the Firefox icon on your desktop:
    • Click it then press del

Step Two - Make Chrome Icon

The Google Chrome logo/icon.
  • Open the applications menu and locate "google chrome" in the "Internet" submenu.
  • Drag the chrome icon (see right) to your desktop.

On some versions, you will be offered a menu. Click "Copy".

The icon will now appear on your desktop.

Step Three - Setup and Make Chrome Default Browser

  • Double click the Chrome Icon on your desktop (you may be warned that this will start a program1 Agree to this and the program will open.)
  • A box will appear offering to import Firefox settings and bookmarks. You should do this.
  • A banner will appear at the top of the page asking to make Chrome default browser, click "make default browser" or similar wording.
    • Since that method is unreliable, open the "System" menu and go to "Preferences" → "Preferred Applications"
    • Check that "Google Chrome" is selected for "Web Browser". If not, open the menu there and change it manually.
    • Click close

Extensions

Like Firefox, Google Chrome offers many useful extensions and themes. Open the "Wrench" Menu and you will find an "extensions" item under the "tools" submenu. There will be a 'get more extensions' link on this page.

Notes

1 This is an unusual security feature of the desktop. It will only appear once.
