Windows 7 Bug Workaround Method

Do not follow these instructions unless you experience the bug!

First, double check that you are attached to the Celery WiFi and are correctly logged into Frontios (try accessing Sharespace) using the username and password smbguest

Open a command line window

Press + r

type cmd and click "OK"

This window appears:

Map the Network Printer to a local port

This step tricks Windows into thinking that the remote printer is attached to a physical connector (known as a port2) on the computer called a "Parallel" or "IEEE 1284"3 port. It does not matter if your device does not have this port or that the printer itself does not support this type of port.

Enter the following command exactly as shown, including capitalization! it is mandatory to use the back-stroke, the forwards stroke will not work. You must press enter after entering this command.

net use LPT2 \\FRONTIOS\Deskjet-D1400-series

If you are not comfortable typing that, exactly, select and copy it from this page, then right-click the "cmd.exe" window and click "paste", then press enter.

Set up the device

  1. Go to → Devices and Printers
  2. Click "Add a Printer" (not, "Add a Device")
  3. Click "Local Printer"4 not "Network Printer"
  1. Make sure "Use an Existing Port" is highlighted, then change "LPT1: (Printer Port)" to "LPT2: (Printer Port)"
  1. Click Next
  2. You will see a two-column display. Under Manufacturer, click "HP", then, under "Printers" scroll down to "HP Deskjet D1400 Series". Click that, then click "Next"
  1. You may see a screen reading "Which Version of the Driver do you Want to Use", if so, just accept the defaults and click "next".
  2. In the next screen, accept the default printer name
  3. If asked, click "Do not share the printer" (IMPORTANT!)
  4. Click "Finish"
