A typical KDE session

The K Desktop Environment is a popular Desktop Environment for UNIX. Along with GNOME and XFCE it forms the "big three" full featured environments on this platform. The current version of KDE is KDE4 which uses the Qt 4 toolkit (see X11 for a discussion of what graphical toolkits are).

Like all graphical programs on UNIX, KDE runs on top of X11. KDE is a full featured environment that provides a desktop, window manager, panel, task manager, sessions management and various tools and utilities. KDE also provides a group-ware suite and office suite which are disabled on Vistua's KDE installations in favor of Vistua's own web-based groupware solution and OpenOffice.

KDE's verison 4 series has suffered from engineering and design problems which have lead to stability and performance issues, although KDE's new direction for the project is visionary it may not be executable, time will tell.
