Note: this article is about using portable music devices with the Frontios music collection. For support for software that plays Mp3 files please ask admin as we currently do not have an article about this..
1. Connecting the Device to the Computer
- The Mp3 player should be connected by a USB port in the usual manner
- Open the K menu → computer, you will notice an entry for your player, near the bottom. It will likely be labeled with the name of the manufacturer or the brand of player. Click on this
- Your device is now open in the File Manager. You may notice one or more folders.
2. Adding Music to the Device
Note: If your device has a folder called music or mp3 or similar, you must add your music files to this folder, if you do not, they may not be properly indexed and may not be playable from your device.
- You will need to open another file manager window (or a tab in the existing window, although this is more cumbersome). To do this, go to "File → New Window" or similar.

Your File Manager may vary
- Navigate to the location for the music collection.
On frontios this is /usr/share/music on other nodes attached to the VNS LAN or WLAN this is usually located at /net/home/music/ if you are using one of these nodes and the collection is not in this location, please check that your node's network connection is active and that you have mounted all remote filesystems. If this still does not work please contact admin.
- Copy the music (and/or folders) from the music collection to the window for your device by drag and drop. The collection is organized alphabetically by letter and you may need to descend into subfolders.
Please take care to avoid moving any of the music files to your player, this would be very annoying to other users.
3. Deleting Music From the Device
Music files may be deleted from the device in the usual way, be sure to empty trash before disconnecting your device or the files may not actually be deleted.
4. Safely Disconnecting the Device
- Close all file manager windows except the one showing your device.
- In this window, double click "Home" to navigate there
- Right click the icon for your device and select "Safely Remove"
- You may now remove your device.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1 Music files added to device fail to play/are not detected.
- Cause: Music files are in an incompatible format.
The vast majority of music files in the collection are in Mp3 format (MPEG-1 Level 3 (ISO/IEC 11172-3, ISO/IEC 13818-3)), however, a few files are in other formats such as FLAC or Ogg Vorbis. Please see the June 22, 2009
General Notice Board posting on this topic (archived at
Wiki.Music-june2220090522)
- Alternate Cause: Music files are not in proper folder.
Some Mp3 players require that files be in a specific folder, typically called music or mp3 or similar.
5.2 After deleting music files, file manager still claims that device is out of space.
If you have deleted music files from your player to make room for new ones but have not regained the lost space, this is because the files are not actually deleted until you empty the trash. The trash serves as a grace mechanism to allow you to recover from accidental deletions.
5.3 'Device Busy' error on Safe Removal attempt.
- Cause: Another program is accessing the device.
Close all music playing software and all file manager windows, then open a new file manager window and attempt again.
- Alternate Cause 1: Device is being scanned by a system process.
Wait a little while and try again.
- Alternate Cause 2: System problem.
Do not disconnect your device! File a
Problem Report. Admin will override the problem and allow you to remove your device. We apologize in advance if this happens.
