  5. Click "Change Password"

KDE Method

You may change your password using a simple tool that is part of the KDE environment.

  1. Go to → "System Settings"
  2. The "System Settings" window appears. Click "About Me" in the first quadrant.
  3. Click "Change Password"
  4. You will then be walked through the steps

Console Method

This assumes that you are NOT using ecryptfs. If you are using ecryptfs, this method will not update your encryption password, making it impossible to log in graphically and requiring administrative intervention to correct.

This section assumes that you are reasonably familiar with the UNIX shell environment. These instructions are suitable for all available shells. You could open an Xterm and use this method but there is little reason to if you have access to the Desktop.

  1. Enter the command passwd
  2. Follow the prompts

Password Policy

You are required to abide by the password policy

Notes

BE VERY CAREFUL TO SPELL CORRECTLY!

If your password is lost or forgotten administration can reset it for you, even by remote control. Please contact administration for further assistance. Please be careful not to forget your password. Avoid writing it down, if you do write it down do not store that document anywhere near a PC. Do not give it to anyone.

You can change your Real Name, Work and Home phone numbers from the "About Me" tool. These are values that will be known to the UNIX system and any other user on the UNIX system can read them. They cannot be read by other sites.

To change your E-mail password please see Email documentation

If your password expires you will be prompted for a new one when you log in, attempting to evade the prompt can cause your account to lock-down. Administration tends to be annoyed when this happens so don't do it.
