This crash manifests as a black screen since plasma-workstation is responsible for drawing all desktop components except window frames and no windows are open. Suggested workaround: openbox. Two users confirmed to be affected.
This problem has been solved away. In one case merely emptying the KDE caches solved the problem, in another the users's entire .kde directory had to be deleted and the configuration manually reconstructed.
The cause of the fault remains unknown.
