This is a repeat of the plasma crashing bug which has now been definitively traced to the QtCurve theme. This theme has been removed. Klearlooks is suggested as a replacement.

Unfortunately, the crash seems to have reset the users desktop widgets to the defaults.

Because plasma crashed immediately after instantiation it appeared that the login had failed since nothing was "drawn" on screen as no windows opened. Plasma is the KDE component responsible for drawing the desktop, desktop toolbars and plasma widgets.
