These instructions are for OpenOffice Writer and the HP Deskjet 1400 series printer.
- Open OpenOffice Writer in the usual way by double clicking its icon on your desktop or locating it in your application menu.
- Go to "Insert" → "Envelope" in the drop down menus.
- Fill out the "addressee" box according to the standards used by the destination country. If you want, check the "sender" box and fill in a return-address.
- Go to the "Format" tab. In the "Format" drop-down, select the type of envelope you are using. Normal U.S. business envelopes are "#10".

The Format Tab.
- Go to the "Printer" tab. Make sure that "Shift down" reads
0.20" and click the button with this ideogram:
. Click "New Doc."

The Printer tab.
- The finished envelope will now appear as if it were a document, which it is. Review it to make sure that everything looks sensible.

Proper relative position of paper/envelope (edge of loading tray not shown.)
- Insert as many envelopes as you want. The front of the envelope should face down and the envelopes should be inserted flush with the right edge and until you feel gentle resistance. If you insert until you feel strong resistance there may be problems. As a tip, the bottom edge of size 10 envelopes will be flush with the bottom edge of U.S. letter paper loaded into the tray.
- Press print. Use the print dialog box to choose how many copies of the envelope to print.
Troubleshooting
- If an envelope does not feed into the printer correctly it may be slightly bent or damaged, due to their physical complexity (compared to ordinary paper) there are more possible ways that a part of the envelope could get entangled with an instrument of the printer. Thus it is important to ensure that envelopes are crisp and flat before insertion.
- If the printer also feeds the paper into itself along with the envelope remove the paper.
