Not to be confused with audio.

A massive speaker

Sound is acoustical energy which travels as waves through the air, or another medium, and which can be percieved if it is of sufficient amplitude and certain frequencies by the human ear, or recording equipment. The science of sound and its properties is called "acoustics".

Sound can occur naturally, or be produced by "playing-back" audio. Devices known as "speakers" are mainly used for that purpose. Sound can also be "recorded" into electrical or mechanical transcription, the resulting transcription is known as audio.

Human beings are very interested in sound and have developed much culture, science and technology around sound, in particular harmonious and often highly intricate sounds called "music" which are thought to be aesthetically pleasing.

Confusion between sound and audio is a cause of much ambiguity, in normal speech the terms tend to be used interchangeably; strictly, though, audio refers only to the transcription of acoustical energy and sound refers only to the acoustical energy itself.
