Using the Wireless Speaker

Using the wireless speaker is easy and fun! Just follow these simple steps and the speaker will play whatever audio the computer is generating.

To make the computer generate useful audio consult Amarok Help for instructions on how to play music from the collection, and Audio Cds for a simple method for playing Audio Cds.

  1. Turn on the transmitter. The transmitter is the black box with the on/off switch and the ariel that sits on the desk next to the computer. The light on the device will glow blue when it is on.
  2. Turn on the speaker. Turn its dial to the right, set it to a low volume at first and raise as needed (see below). It can take a second or two for the speaker to tune to the transmitter.
  3. Play sound! Play some sort of sound like music, you may wish to turn the wired speakers off.
  4. Turn everything off When you are finished, please remember to turn the transmitter and the speaker off. The lights on both will go out when they are off. Both these devices are powered by batteries and they will run down more quickly if left powered on when not in use. Please help us to preserve the life of the batteries. The transmitter is rated for 10 hours and the speaker for only 4.

Speaker and transmitter

1.  Tips for optimal playback.

Set the software mixer to 100% and the music player volume to 100%, then set the volume to a comfortable level from the speaker. This will reduce hiss, the louder the volume on the speaker the more hiss, by sending a sound of good amplitude to the speaker we can keep its volume knob lower and thus keep the hiss inaudible.

Avoid loud or very high or low-pitched music, the speaker has limited dynamic range and is monophonic.

2.  Troubleshooting

2.1  No sound from wireless speaker, sound from wired

  • Is both the transmitter and the speaker on? (Check the lights)
    • If they are but the lights are not on, the batteries are dead, replace them as shown below.

2.2  No sound at all

  • Is anything actually playing? Is the player stopped or paused
  • Is the player muted or set to a low volume?
  • Is the software mixer muted? It will look like this:
    • Is the PCM channel muted or not set to a reasonable level like 90% (see Audio Mixing)?
  • Is the Y-cable connected to the speaker-out jack on the back of the computer?
    • Consult administration if you are not sure of this.
  • If you have exhausted all of these possibilities there is a problem, please File a PR.

2.3  Interference or poor quality

  • Turn off
    • Microwaves
    • TVs
    • Radar Dishes
    • Computer Monitors
  • Reposition the transmitter
  • Move mobiles, especially GSM band mobiles, away from the speaker, the transmitter and the computer.
  • The batteries of the transmitter or speaker might be running low.

3.  Replacing the Batteries

The speaker requires 4 C batteries and the transmitter 3 AAA. Please follow this diagram:
