The Vistua Network's internal wireless LAN (WIFI) is available to our users following these instructions:
The SSID is a unique name that identifies each Wireless network. The following SSID(s) are used by Vistua's internal LAN.
The Wireless Network uses WPA2 authentication. This means that you have to enter a password but do not need to use a specific username. The password is available upon request from administration.
The WIFI password is strictly confidential and is not to be disseminated to outside parties! WIFI security must be maintained.
These instructions are for desktop UNIX and Windows operating systems only, VNS does not provide formal support for other operating systems. Please see your vendor's documentation
Go to your desktop. Look for a wifi icon. It looks like this:
or
(may not be blue). It is usually located in a toolbar at the top or bottom of your screen.
Click on that, a menu appears listing all available WIFI networks by SSID. Select "Celery" (or another SSID listed above, if any). On Windows you must then click "connect"
If you are prompted for password please enter it. Follow any other on screen prompts (I.E. click "ok", "next", etc)
You are done. Should your system offer to remember the password it is OK to allow it to do that.
For computer-devices that will connect regularly, it is important that you contact administration about registering your device's MAC address1 so that your device will always be granted the same internal IP number.
This step is important because it allows the network to always locate your specific device, which is necessary for some WLAN services to work properly. It is also necessary for your machines hostname to work reliably.
After this process, it is very important that you not change your machine's hostname without consulting administration!
You should also configure your hosts file according to these instructions.
Generally, other settings available to your operating system should be left alone. In particular, "MTU", "BSSID" and "MAC address" should not be changed! This network does not use IPv6
1 This is not necessary or suitable for smartphones, PDAs etc, even if they connect regularly.
2 "DHCP address only" mode wont work correctly.
