It is difficult to express in a few sentences just how vast the improvements to be reaped from the backend upgrade are.
But one is definitely worth pointing out: a native search engine.
Previously, The Vistua Hub relied upon the third-party Atomz search engine to index the site. This did have certain advantages but it was cumbersome for Admin to maintain and didn’t update very rapidly. The new PmWiki engine that now powers the site has its own searching and indexing solution (WikiSearch) which updates instantly.
WikiSearch was silently implemented without any required action on the part of you, the user.
There are, however, two significant limitations of the WikiSearch.
- It does not search the Whole Vistua Network, just The Hub
- It does not search News & Notes
So now we have made some improvements to allow you to do this.
Just before your search results you will see a row of buttons labeled “Find N&N Article” “Advanced Search”, “Google” and “Cuil”
Just click one of those buttons to repeat your search with those search engines. “Find N&N Article” searches only News and Notes and “Advanced Search” searches the whole Vistua Network System, including user blogs.
Google and Cuil are of course major indexes of most of the Internet.
(P.S. for now you still get the buttons even if you entered no search query, we’ll fix that later.)
We are now testing a new backend for Vistua.com. A backend is a software engineering term for software components which are separate from the front-end (the part the user interacts with).
Previously, the site had been running on a custom built SHTML framework which was getting out of control and becoming difficult to manage. The new backend retains the original appearance (with a few tweaks) but is running on top of PmWiki. PmWiki is a WikiWikiWeb engine, similar in functionality (although radically different in design) to MediaWiki, the software running the famous Wikipedia.
Most of the website has been migrated to the new system. Currently, the old tools page is not yet migrated due to technical difficulties. News & Notes also will not be migrating to PmWiki, at least not yet, because it has specialised needs which are not suited by wiki engines (the News & Notes backend is Wordpress).
A significant part of the WikiWikiWeb concept is the public editability of page. Except for some pages which are locked you can edit Vistua pages yourself. The benefit of this is that if you do not think a page is well designed you can fix it and if you think that a page that doesn’t exist should, you can create it. More informaition on this later. You can go a head and play with the “WikiSandbox” if you like.

We are currently undergoing an operating system Field Test. This test will be conducted for several days to ensure suitability.
It is hoped that the Intel Video Regression is repaired in this operating system version, however, if you experience a frozen system instructions may be found on the front of the station.
This upgrade is fully reversible, having been installed on a separate disk. If the upgrade proves unsuitable it will be wiped and the current operating system will continue to be used.
Should the upgrade be suitable, as it is hoped, both operating systems will be wiped and the new operating system installed in the usual place.
This is possible due to advanced partitioning of the disks. The ‘current’ operating system exists on partitions of hard disk B. Hard disk A normally contains recorded television programs and music (but these have temporarily been moved elsewhere) and the ‘test’ operating system exists on partitions of hard disk A.
Because your files and settings exist in a separate partition on hard disk B it is possible for your files to be accessed from an operating system running on either disk. As a result of this your files are now available to you and you can use the operating system without bothering to worry about how it works.
Feedback is sought, particularly record of any freezes as we are looking for evidence of the Intel Video Regression before the upgrade is committed.
NEWS: Time Warner Cable has announced that it has abandoned the so-called “Tiered Pricing” scheme in the Rochester market. This scheme would have caused rates to ascend to previously unthinkable of levels of extravagance, as opposed to the currently cognizable levels of extravagance they now stand at.
Consumer and political pressure, including a number of large Facebook group, public demonstrations and speechification by Sen. Charles Shumer may have been factors in the move.
The reprieve is sure to be temporary, Time Warner will dress the pig in Versace and return to it again.
Further information as it is needed.
